Library Picks.com is the most extensive database of book reviews and textbook statistics in the world, and is the official database of book reviews, recommendations and picks for AALRP.org -- the American Association of Library Reviewers and Purchasers. LPC proactively sends the Library Picks publication in print and electronically to over 130,000 library purchasers and reviewers each month, and over 466,000 organizations worldwide. Over 6.9 million individual member database searches are run each day. In addition, Library Picks.com feeds to thousands of vertical book blogs, including Science Journal News, ALA, and numerous other services used by libraries, universities, teachers and bookstores worldwide. Library Picks staff are administrators on Wikipedia.org and 9 other specialty Wikis, Amazon VINE reviewers, and contributors to thousands of specialty news feeds about important new titles.
History
Library Reviews was established in 1968 by AALRP to assist Librarians and Library Procurement Personnel in sorting through the vast number of important new titles. The service was orginally in newsletter format in a simple crosstabs database. With the advent of the web in the late 1980's, PSU's supercomputing center in San Diego contracted with AALRP to create Library Picks.com, a unique and proprietary database of millions of titles with rankings from thousands of reviewers developed over may years by AALRP. The LPC database is kept current hourly with the latest new titles and reviews, many not yet released except to reviewers. Library Picks proprietary scoring algorithms, developed at MIT, sort through the impossible wealth of new and classic titles and reviews daily to recommend "must have" titles to libraries, booksellers and individuals, by keyword. In 2009, the LP service was extended from libraries and universities to individuals, commercial bookstores and online sellers. Librarian Services
The Library Picks service is free for individual, library, university, corporate, organizational and bookseller members of AALRP. Per use topical or quality runs are available by contacting Library Picks.com. Notification levels of important new titles and top reviews can be selected, and the LP.c database can be searched by keyword, title, ISBN, author, rating, date, and many other parameters. A unique feature of the Library Picks system is the ability to create a "BEST BOOK LIST" in any category, class or topic by simply sorting the class, keyword or category, then querying a list call for top rankings. Some titles have over 500 reviews, many by librarians according to use, as well as top technical reviewers in each field. Need to know what the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, graduate syllabus, or an individual university library considers a "must?" Library Picks.com is the ONLY database with all that information in one searchable database. New libraries frequently use Library Picks.com for their entire initial stocking inventory.
Other Stakeholders
In addition to the largest database of reviews and titles, LP has an extensive network of professional reviewers, and hundreds of applications are accepted each day for new candidate reviewers based upon credentials, experience, and specialty. Librarians are especially encouraged to apply. Publishers may send manuscripts or review copies by email or mail. To reach top 25 in a category, or top 30 in a new release "must" list, a title requires a minimum of 50 reviews. On average, it takes only 60 days to reach that level of reviews via the AALRP network. The LP.c review database is currently available in 13 languages, with projects to include another 33 in the next three years. University professors and researchers worldwide use the LPC service to check their curriculum and references against the world's best. Are you an author or editor compiling an extensive bibliography for a new book? LPC is a MUST to be sure you've included the most up to date and highly regarded professional, technical and scientific references!
